In a world increasingly conscious of environmental impact, industries are reimagining their operations to embrace sustainability. Hadfield Services Ltd, founded in 2008 and a proud member of Hallmark Engineering Group, stands at the forefront of this transformation in the electrical engineering sector. By weaving sustainable practices into the very fabric of their operations, HSL is demonstrating that innovation and environmental responsibility canāand mustāgo hand in hand.
Efficiency Through Innovation
At the heart of HSL’s sustainability journey is a commitment to efficiency without compromising quality. One of our flagship achievements is the development of the Common Architecture Programmer (CAP) Rig.
“Previously, programming a single unit manually could take up to 30 minutes,” explains Martin Hadfield, Technical Director of HSL. “With the CAP Rig, we’re able to program four units in just 6.5 minutes. This not only boosts productivity but significantly reduces our energy consumption.”
The CAP Rig is a fully automated programming and testing system that has revolutionised the company’s operations. Its success has resonated beyond the UK, with international clients adopting the technology to enhance their own manufacturing processes.
“Innovation isn’t just about creating something new, it’s about improving efficiency and reducing waste,” Hadfield adds. “The CAP Rig embodies our approach to sustainable engineering.”

Responsible Sourcing and Recycling
Sustainability at HSL extends beyond technological advancements. Our company places a strong emphasis on responsible sourcing and waste reduction.
“We prioritise sourcing materials from trusted suppliers like RS, Digi-Key, and Mouser,” says Damien Wilson, Managing Director at HSL and Chief Operating Officer at Hallmark Engineering Group. “This ensures not only the quality of our components but also that they meet stringent environmental and ethical standards.”
HSL has implemented comprehensive recycling programs, particularly focusing on waste wire and cardboard packaging.
“Every scrap of wire and piece of cardboard is recycled,” notes Ryan Parsons, Manufacturing and Quality Manager. “It’s about making conscious choices at every level of operation to minimise our environmental footprint.”
Proceeds from recycling initiatives are reinvested into team development, fostering a culture where sustainability and employee engagement go hand in hand.
Aiming for ISO 14001 Certification
Looking ahead, HSL is on track to achieve ISO 14001 Certification by early 2025, an internationally recognised standard for effective environmental management systems.
Alex Hampton, Commercial Director, underscores the significance of this goal: “ISO 14001 certification will formalise our commitment to environmental stewardship. It’s not just a badgeāit’s a framework that will guide us in continuous improvement and compliance with global best practices.”
The certification process involves rigorous evaluation of the company’s environmental policies, ensuring they meet legal requirements and set measurable objectives for sustainability.
Small Steps with Big Impact
While major projects like the CAP Rig capture attention, HSL recognises the importance of incremental changes. The adoption of precision heat tools is one such initiative.
“These tools use only the exact amount of power needed for each task,” explains Parsons. “By reducing unnecessary energy consumption, we make our processes more efficient and environmentally friendly.”
The company’s focus on everyday actions reflects a holistic approach to sustainability, where every team member contributes to a larger environmental goal.
We foster a culture where every individual understands the impact of their actions. Through training and open communication, we empower our team to make decisions that benefit both the company and the environment.
Building a Sustainable Future
Hadfield Services Ltd exemplifies how a company can successfully integrate sustainability into its core operations without sacrificing innovation or profitability. Our efforts demonstrate a clear understanding that environmental responsibility is essential for long-term success.
“Our vision is to make life easierānot just for our clients but for future generations,” concludes Hadfield. “By embedding sustainability into everything we do, we’re ensuring that our progress today doesn’t compromise the world of tomorrow.”
